Professional Policing

Professional policing is one of the most visible and socially significant forms of public service. The police have a unique responsibility for maintaining public safety, upholding the law and working with communities to prevent and detect crime, and the complexity of that responsibility has grown considerably in recent decades. Modern policing requires not just operational capability but the legal knowledge, ethical judgement, communication skills and critical thinking that this degree develops directly.

Studying professional policing at the University of Northampton prepares you for a career in the police service while also equipping you with a transferable set of skills relevant across the criminal justice system and public sector.

This three-year full-time programme combines the academic study of policing with practical and professional development. You will cover topics including criminal law, policing powers and procedures, evidence and investigation, crime prevention, community policing, vulnerability and safeguarding, counter-terrorism, the ethics of policing and the social and cultural context of crime. You will develop your ability to reason and communicate under pressure, to handle sensitive information responsibly and to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and in challenging situations.

The programme is aligned with the College of Policing's professional framework, preparing you to meet the standards required for a career in the service.

Graduates typically apply to join a police force, often through a degree-holder entry route that offers an accelerated pathway into the service. Others move into related roles in the criminal justice system, the security sector, local government, safeguarding, community safety or policy. The degree provides a strong foundation for further study in criminology, law, public administration or security studies, and the analytical and professional skills developed are valued across a wide range of public and third-sector careers.
