Professional Policing

Professional policing is a degree pathway specifically designed to prepare graduates for a career in the police service, combining academic study of the theoretical, legislative and social frameworks of law enforcement with the practical skills and professional formation the role demands. Policing in the twenty-first century requires practitioners who can think critically, communicate with diverse communities, navigate complex legal and ethical situations and uphold rights and dignity in environments that are often fast-moving, emotionally demanding and operationally unpredictable. A degree-level qualification has become an important part of the route into policing following the introduction of the Police Education Qualification Framework.

At Sheffield Hallam University this part-time programme follows a curriculum licensed by the College of Policing, ensuring that it aligns directly with national professional standards and the competencies required for entry into the police service. You will study across a wide range of theoretical and legislative subjects, developing your understanding of criminal law, human rights, safeguarding, evidence-based policing, diversity and inclusion, and the ethical principles that govern police conduct. The programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct operational experience alongside your academic studies.

This combination of theory and practice is designed to produce graduates who are both intellectually prepared and practically ready for the demands of policing.

Graduates of professional policing programmes are well positioned to apply for roles as police constables, with the degree providing the qualifications aligned to national entry standards. Over time, policing offers a substantial career ladder, with progression through detective and investigative roles, specialist units covering cybercrime, serious organised crime, counter-terrorism and public protection, and leadership and management pathways toward senior ranks. Some graduates also find roles in related fields including criminal justice, probation, border force, intelligence services and public sector investigation.
