Professional Policing

Professional policing is a demanding and evolving career that requires more than physical fitness and procedural knowledge. Modern policing calls for critical thinking, ethical awareness, cultural sensitivity, an understanding of law and criminal justice, and the ability to manage complex human situations under pressure. A degree in professional policing provides the academic and professional preparation to enter this career with a strong foundation in the principles, practices, and values that shape effective and accountable policing.

The University of Chester's four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional academic preparation, as well as a year abroad that gives you the opportunity to study or train in an international context. Chester's programme engages with policing from multiple angles, examining the legal frameworks within which officers operate, the sociology of crime and social order, the psychology of offending and victimisation, ethics and human rights, policing policy, and the practical skills of investigation and community engagement. You will develop your understanding of how policing institutions work, how they are shaped by politics and public expectation, and how they are changing in response to new forms of crime and new demands for accountability.

The programme prepares you for the professional competencies assessed in police recruitment and initial training.

Graduates in professional policing are well positioned for careers in police forces across England and Wales, where a degree is now an increasingly standard requirement for entry. The degree also provides a foundation for careers in related areas of criminal justice, including probation, youth justice, border control, the National Crime Agency, and private security. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in criminology, security studies, or law, developing specialist expertise that supports progression to senior or specialist roles.
