Professional Nursing

Mental health nursing is one of the most demanding and meaningful of the nursing specialisms, concerned with supporting people experiencing the full range of mental health conditions, from anxiety and depression through to psychosis, personality disorders, substance misuse, and acute psychiatric crises. Mental health nurses work in a wide range of settings: inpatient wards and secure units, community mental health teams, crisis services, primary care, and specialist services for children and young people, older adults, and people with complex needs. The role requires scientific knowledge, therapeutic skill, and the ability to build trusting relationships with people at very vulnerable moments in their lives.

At Queen's University of Belfast, this three-year full-time programme integrates theory and practice, with students spending half their time in university developing theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, and the other half in clinical and community placements with internationally recognised training partners across Northern Ireland. The balance between academic and practical training is a defining feature of nursing education, and the placement experience is where professional identity, clinical competence, and patient-facing skills are developed. The programme equips you with the knowledge, skills, and professional attributes needed to deliver person-centred, team-based, safe, and effective care in a fast-paced and dynamic health service.

You will study mental health theory, psychological therapies, pharmacology, legal and ethical frameworks, and the management of acute and chronic mental health conditions, developing the evidence-based practice and reflective capacity that effective nursing demands.

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is required to practise as a registered mental health nurse in the UK. Career settings include NHS mental health trusts, independent sector services, community teams, and crisis services. With experience, mental health nurses move into specialist, management, and advanced practice roles.
