Primary Education

This four-year, full-time programme at Strathclyde places social justice at the heart of teaching and learning, recognising that primary teachers work in communities with diverse needs and that effective teaching requires both subject knowledge and genuine commitment to all children's success. You will study across the primary curriculum, develop your pedagogical skills through extensive school placement, and engage with the social, cultural, and political contexts that shape educational practice. The programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to experience primary education in a different national context and to bring that broader perspective back to your professional development.

Successful completion leads to a recognised teaching qualification that allows you to register as a primary school teacher with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. Graduates typically move into primary teaching in Scottish schools, with the programme's emphasis on social justice and community engagement also supporting roles in special educational needs, community education, and educational policy. Further postgraduate study in educational leadership, curriculum development, or specialist pedagogy is a natural extension for those who wish to develop senior professional expertise.
