Portuguese is a language of global reach and cultural richness, spoken natively by more than two hundred million people across Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, and several other countries, making it one of the most geographically distributed languages in the world. Studying it at degree level opens access not only to the contemporary Portuguese-speaking world but to a literary tradition of exceptional depth, encompassing medieval lyric poetry, the epic poetry of Camoes, the existentialist fiction of Fernando Pessoa, and the magical realism and political engagement of the Brazilian literary tradition.

At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year degree develops your linguistic competence in Portuguese from the appropriate starting point to a high level of fluency, while simultaneously building your knowledge of the cultures, histories, and literatures of the Lusophone world. You will engage with literary texts from Portugal and Brazil in particular, studying works in their original language and exploring the historical and cultural contexts that shaped them. The degree also attends to the contemporary Portuguese-speaking world, examining the politics, culture, and economic development of Brazil and of the former Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia.
