Portuguese and Turkish

Portuguese and Turkish is a combination that places students at the intersection of two linguistically and culturally rich traditions with significant global reach and contemporary relevance. Portuguese is spoken by over 250 million people across Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola and several other nations, giving it one of the broadest geographic footprints of any language in the world. Turkish, spoken by around 85 million people, is the language of a major regional power at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, a NATO member and an increasingly significant player in global geopolitics, trade and culture.

Studying both at Oxford offers a distinctive and demanding academic experience.

At Oxford, this four-year programme develops both languages to an advanced level within the university's tutorial-based system, which places you in close intellectual dialogue with specialists in each tradition. You will study the literatures, histories and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world, from the medieval lyric tradition through to Brazilian modernism and contemporary Lusophone fiction, and of the Turkish-speaking world, from the Ottoman literary heritage to modern Turkish society and political culture. The programme combines linguistic training, textual analysis and cultural and historical study across both traditions.

The typical entry tariff is 184 UCAS points.

Graduates move into careers in diplomacy, international organisations, journalism, academic research, translation and interpreting, business in Portuguese-speaking and Turkish-speaking markets, cultural organisations, and the many roles that require specialist knowledge of these linguistic regions. The combination of Portuguese and Turkish is unusual enough to be genuinely distinctive in the job market, and graduates are well placed in any professional environment requiring expertise in Lusophone or Turkic contexts. Many continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, area studies, translation or international relations.
