About this course

Portuguese is a global language, one of the most widely spoken in the world, carrying vast literary, cultural, and commercial significance through Portugal, Brazil, and the Portuguese-speaking nations of Africa and beyond. Linguistics is the scientific study of language itself, examining how human languages are structured, how they are acquired, how they change over time, and what they reveal about the nature of human cognition and communication. Studying them together gives you both a deep practical command of a major world language and a systematic framework for understanding how language works.

At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme develops your Portuguese to an advanced level through sustained study of the language and engagement with literature, culture, and history from across the Portuguese-speaking world. In linguistics, you will explore phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, examining both universal features of human language and the ways in which languages differ from one another. You will also encounter areas such as sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and historical linguistics, developing a broad and rigorous understanding of language as a human phenomenon.

The combination allows you to apply linguistic analysis to Portuguese directly, deepening your understanding of both the language and the theoretical frameworks through which you study it.

Graduates from Portuguese and linguistics go on to careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy, education, language teaching, journalism, publishing, and the civil service. Portuguese in particular is valued in roles connected to Brazil and the broader Latin American market, to Portuguese-speaking Africa, and to European institutions and trade. The analytical skills developed through linguistics are also valued in research, computational linguistics, speech technology, and any field where rigorous thinking about communication matters.

Postgraduate study in linguistics, Portuguese studies, or translation is a common next step for those wishing to develop their expertise.
