About this course

Population health sciences with a data science specialisation sits at one of the most important frontiers in modern public health: the ability to use large-scale health data to understand disease, evaluate interventions and guide policy. Population health science examines how health and disease are distributed across populations, what social and biological factors determine health outcomes, and how health systems can be designed to produce better results at scale. Data science provides the quantitative and computational methods to extract meaningful insight from the vast health datasets that modern healthcare and research generate.

At UCL, which is one of the world's leading institutions for biomedical research and public health, this three-year programme combines rigorous training in epidemiological methods, biostatistics and health data analysis with the computational skills of data science, including programming, machine learning, database management and the handling of complex, linked datasets. You will engage with real health data and learn to apply statistical models to questions of disease burden, risk factors, health inequality and the evaluation of health programmes. UCL's location in London, a centre for health research and policy, provides exceptional access to research collaborations and professional networks.

Graduates work in NHS analytical teams, public health agencies, research institutes, pharmaceutical companies, health technology organisations, government departments and international health bodies. Roles include health data analyst, epidemiologist, public health intelligence specialist, clinical research associate and health informatics specialist.
