Politics with International Relations

Politics with international relations is a degree that connects the analysis of domestic political systems with the study of how states interact in the international arena. Politics covers the structures, institutions, and processes of government, including how power is organised and exercised, how policy is made, and how ideology and organisation shape political life. International relations extends this outward, examining the relationships between states, the role of international organisations and non-state actors, and the forces, including military power, economic interdependence, and norms and institutions, that shape the behaviour of states in a world without a central authority.

At Teesside University, this full-time, three-year programme engages with the full range of political systems and the international environment in which they operate. You will examine contemporary political situations in the United States and elsewhere, looking at the ideological divisions, policy debates, and institutional dynamics that define current political struggles, as well as the international dimensions that shape domestic politics and vice versa. The programme develops the analytical tools needed to understand and interpret political events critically, whether the question is about electoral outcomes, foreign policy, international conflict, or the governance of international institutions.

Graduates from politics with international relations programmes move into careers in the civil service and foreign office, think tanks and policy research organisations, journalism, international organisations including the UN and EU, NGOs, and the private sector in roles requiring political and geopolitical understanding. Graduate schemes in public sector organisations, consultancy firms, and international bodies are all recruiting grounds. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in politics, international relations, security studies, or public policy, and academic careers in political science are open to those who pursue doctoral research.
