Politics, Philosophy and Economics with Foundation Year

Politics, philosophy and economics, known as PPE, is one of the most celebrated and widely studied degree combinations in the UK. It brings together three disciplines that address the most fundamental questions about how societies are organised and governed: philosophy asks what is true, what is right, and what we can know; economics examines how resources are allocated, how markets work, and how policy decisions affect wellbeing; and politics studies power, institutions, and the processes through which collective decisions are made and contested. Together, they produce graduates who can think rigorously, argue clearly, and engage with the most important questions of public life from multiple analytical angles.

At York St John University, this four-year programme includes a foundation year for students who would benefit from a structured introduction to degree-level thinking before engaging with the main degree, and a sandwich year and year abroad for those who want to gain professional experience and an international perspective during their studies. Work placement provision is built in. The programme explores the theories, ideologies, and processes that shape modern societies, engaging with crucial contemporary debates from the complementary perspectives of all three disciplines.

PPE graduates are among the most sought-after across the professions. The civil service, journalism, law, finance, management consultancy, international organisations, think tanks, NGOs, and political parties all actively recruit from PPE programmes. The combination of analytical rigour, quantitative literacy, and political and philosophical awareness is precisely what many of the most demanding employers want.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in economics, politics, law, or public policy, and the degree has historically been a common route into senior public life and leadership.
