Politics and Sociology

Politics and sociology together provide one of the most powerful analytical frameworks available for understanding contemporary society. Politics examines the distribution and exercise of power, the behaviour of states, parties and voters, the design of institutions and the processes through which collective decisions are made and contested. Sociology examines the social structures, cultural forces and material conditions that shape how people live, what they think, and how they relate to one another and to institutions.

Together they allow you to ask both formal questions about political systems and deeper questions about the social conditions that produce and reproduce them.

At the University of Warwick you will engage critically with contemporary society in the UK and beyond, developing expertise in political theory, comparative politics, international relations, social stratification, gender, the state and the relationship between political and social change. You will be introduced to both the major theoretical traditions and the empirical research methods that underpin serious work in both fields. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you substantial opportunity to apply your analytical skills in professional and international settings and to develop the broader experience that strengthens graduate employability.

You will develop skills in critical analysis, social and political research methods, academic writing, and the ability to construct and evaluate arguments across competing theoretical perspectives. These are genuinely transferable abilities that are valued across many sectors.

Graduates from politics and sociology programmes pursue careers in the civil service, public policy, politics, journalism, social research, education, the charity sector, trade unions, human resources and international organisations. Postgraduate study in politics, sociology, public policy, law or international relations is a well-established route for those who want to develop specialist expertise or move into research-oriented careers.
