Politics and Philosophy

Politics and philosophy is one of the most productive disciplinary combinations in the humanities and social sciences. Politics examines how power is organised, legitimated, and contested, from the structure of democratic institutions to the dynamics of international relations and the forces of social movements. Philosophy brings the tools of rigorous argument, conceptual clarity, and ethical reasoning to bear on the questions that political life raises: what makes authority legitimate?

What do we owe each other as citizens? What does justice require? Studied together, they develop a capacity for serious, principled thinking about the most important questions in public life.

At the University of Sheffield, this three-year full-time degree engages you in the big debates of contemporary politics through the double lens of empirical political science and philosophical analysis. You will examine questions of ethics, justice, human rights, and political legitimacy, drawing on the thought of major figures from Plato, Kant, and Marx to contemporary political philosophers. The programme develops your ability to construct and evaluate arguments, to understand political institutions and ideologies in their historical context, and to connect theoretical reflection to real-world political issues.

The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad option, and work placements, all of which strengthen your professional readiness and international perspective. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.

Graduates of politics and philosophy degrees pursue careers in the civil service, politics and policy research, journalism, law, international organisations, campaigning and advocacy, the charity sector, and academia. The ability to think clearly and argue carefully about contested questions is valued across every field where public life is at stake. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in political philosophy, political science, law, or public policy, finding that their combined training gives them a distinctive analytical foundation.
