About this course

Politics and modern languages and cultures is a combination that addresses the insight that political life cannot be fully understood without linguistic and cultural access to the societies in which it takes place. Politics examines the distribution of power, the behaviour of states and political actors, the design of institutions, the dynamics of international relations and the forces that drive political change. Modern languages and cultures provide access to specific political, social and cultural environments in their own terms, developing the linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding needed to engage seriously with how politics works in different national contexts.

At the University of Sheffield you will study politics alongside your chosen language and its associated cultural tradition, examining political issues from different cultural perspectives and situating your language study within broader political and historical contexts. The programme runs full time over four years, reflecting the depth of language study required for advanced proficiency, and is designed to develop both rigorous analytical thinking about politics and the cross-cultural communication skills that genuine language learning provides.

You will develop advanced language proficiency alongside skills in political analysis, comparative politics, international relations and cultural studies. The ability to engage seriously with political systems and cultures in more than one language is a distinctive competence that differentiates you from monolingual graduates in both politics and languages.

Graduates from politics and modern languages programmes pursue careers in diplomacy, the foreign office, international organisations, the European Union institutions, politics and public affairs, journalism, international development, the civil service and commercial roles with a cross-border dimension. The combination of political analysis and language skills is particularly valued in any career requiring genuine engagement across national and cultural boundaries. Postgraduate study in politics, international relations, a modern language or European affairs is also a well-established route.

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links …

Highly recommend
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a brill…
