Politics and International Relations
Politics and international relations together provide a framework for understanding both the domestic structures of political power and the global dynamics through which states and other actors interact across borders. Politics examines the distribution and exercise of power within societies, the institutions and processes of governance, the ideologies that shape political conflict, and the democratic and legal frameworks that constrain political actors. International relations examines how those actors behave beyond their borders and how the resulting interactions produce war, cooperation, diplomacy, trade, and the governance of global challenges such as climate change and migration.
At the University of Sussex, this three-year, full-time degree takes those questions seriously. You will engage with the major issues of global politics, from the return of war in Europe and the politics of climate action to the inequalities that divide societies and the international sphere, with the analytical tools to go beyond headlines and examine structural causes and consequences. A foundation year is available for students who need additional preparation, and a sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement are all options within the programme, giving you extensive opportunities for professional experience and international study.
