Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession dedicated to restoring and maintaining physical function, movement, and quality of life in people affected by injury, illness, or disability. Physiotherapists work with a wide range of patient groups, from athletes recovering from sports injuries and people undergoing post-surgical rehabilitation to stroke survivors and patients with long-term neurological or musculoskeletal conditions. The profession requires both clinical knowledge and strong interpersonal skills, as the therapeutic relationship between physiotherapist and patient is central to effective treatment.

At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time programme combines academic study with extensive supervised clinical experience, preparing you thoroughly for registration and practice. An important feature for eligible students is the potential to receive a full NHS bursary covering tuition fees and a non-repayable contribution to living costs, in return for an agreement to work in Wales for two years after registration. This arrangement reflects the value placed on the profession by the Welsh NHS and makes the programme financially accessible to students who might otherwise face significant debt.

You will study anatomy, physiology, pathology, musculoskeletal and neurological assessment, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and the professional and ethical frameworks that govern physiotherapy practice. Clinical placements are an essential part of the programme, exposing you to the real diversity of physiotherapy across different settings and patient groups.

Graduates who meet the required standards are eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as physiotherapists. Career pathways include musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, paediatric, sports, and community physiotherapy across NHS and private settings. Many physiotherapists specialise and develop into senior clinical, management, or research roles.
