Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is the healthcare profession concerned with restoring and maintaining movement and physical function following injury, illness, or disability. Physiotherapists work with patients across the full life span and in a remarkable range of clinical contexts: from orthopaedic wards and intensive care units to community rehabilitation teams, sports medicine, paediatrics, and neurological services. The profession combines deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and the biomechanics of movement with the practical skills of assessment, manual therapy, exercise prescription, and patient education.
At the University of the West of England, Bristol, you will study physiotherapy over three years full-time on a programme designed to develop your clinical competence, professional reasoning, and the person-centred communication skills that effective physiotherapy demands. You will study anatomy, physiology, musculoskeletal medicine, neurology, and respiratory care, alongside the evidence-based practice frameworks that guide clinical decision-making. A substantial proportion of the programme is delivered through supervised clinical placements in NHS and other healthcare settings, where you develop your practical skills across a range of specialisms and patient groups.
The programme leads to eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points.
Graduates register as physiotherapists and work across the NHS, the independent sector, and sport. Musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, respiratory physiotherapy, paediatrics, sports physiotherapy, and community rehabilitation are among the many specialisms available. With experience and further study, physiotherapists develop into advanced and consultant practitioner roles, taking on extended clinical responsibilities and contributing to service development and research.
