Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is the healthcare profession concerned with movement and physical function, helping people recover from injury, manage long-term conditions, and maintain their mobility and independence across the lifespan. Physiotherapists work with a remarkably broad range of patients, from premature infants and children with developmental conditions to elite athletes, people recovering from stroke or surgery, and older adults managing the effects of ageing. The work requires a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology alongside excellent clinical reasoning, communication and therapeutic skills.

At the University of Northampton this three-year full-time programme leads to qualification as a physiotherapist and eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. You will study the musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory systems in depth, developing your understanding of how physical conditions arise and how physiotherapy interventions can address them. Clinical placements run throughout the programme, giving you direct experience of working with patients across a range of settings including hospitals, community clinics, rehabilitation units and sports environments.

You will develop the assessment, treatment planning and manual therapy skills that define professional physiotherapy practice, as well as the communication and professional judgement that working with vulnerable patients demands.

Physiotherapy is a profession in consistent demand, and graduates from pre-registration programmes are well placed in the NHS and the independent sector. Physiotherapists work in hospitals, GP practices, community health services, sports clubs, occupational health settings and private clinics. Experienced practitioners can specialise in areas such as musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, paediatrics, respiratory care or sports medicine, and many move into clinical education, management or research over time.

Postgraduate study is also available for physiotherapists who want to develop advanced clinical or research expertise. The degree is a direct qualification for a profession that makes a genuine and practical difference to people's lives.
