About this course

Physiological sciences is the study of how living systems work, examining the mechanical, physical and biochemical functions of the body at every level from molecules and cells to organs and whole organisms. It is a fundamental biological discipline that underpins our understanding of health and disease, providing the scientific basis for medicine, pharmacology, sports science and many biomedical technologies. Questions about how the heart regulates blood flow, how the nervous system processes information, how the lungs exchange gases or how muscles generate force are all within the scope of physiological enquiry.

At Newcastle University, this three-year full-time programme is particularly well structured for practical and international experience. It includes a sandwich year for extended professional placement, a year abroad at a partner institution, and work placement experience built into the programme. You will study human physiology systematically, covering cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, neural, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems, alongside cell biology, biochemistry, pharmacology and research methods.

The sandwich and placement components allow you to apply this knowledge in laboratory, clinical or research settings, developing professional skills and demonstrating your competence to future employers in a real environment.

Graduates from physiological sciences programmes are well placed for careers in biomedical research, pharmaceutical companies, clinical physiology roles within the NHS, sports science, healthcare science, regulatory agencies and science communication.
