About this course

Physics with quantum science and technologies is a degree designed for those who want to engage with one of the most scientifically and technically significant frontiers of the twenty-first century. Quantum mechanics is the theoretical framework that governs the behaviour of matter and energy at the atomic and subatomic scale, and the technologies it makes possible, including quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and quantum imaging, are beginning to transform computation, cryptography, medical imaging and navigation. Understanding this field requires both rigorous physics and engagement with the engineering challenges of making quantum effects useful in the real world.

At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time programme combines a thorough physics education with focused study of the emerging field of quantum science and technologies. You will study classical and modern physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and special relativity, before specialising in quantum optics, quantum information, quantum computing principles and the experimental techniques used to control and measure quantum systems. The programme develops your ability to move between theoretical understanding and the practical challenges of working with systems at the quantum scale.

You will develop strong mathematical and analytical skills alongside problem-solving, experimental competence and scientific communication. Southampton's research groups in photonics and quantum science provide an environment in which the discipline is actively developed.

Graduates go on to careers in quantum technology companies, national laboratories, defence and security agencies, high-technology manufacturing, computing and the broader photonics industry, as well as academic research. Postgraduate study in physics, quantum technologies or photonics is a common route for those pursuing research or specialist technical careers.
