About this course

Physics with nuclear science is a degree that takes you into one of the most fundamental and practically consequential areas of the physical sciences. Physics provides the theoretical and mathematical foundations for understanding the natural world at every scale, from quantum mechanics and the behaviour of subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the universe. Nuclear science applies these foundations specifically to the atomic nucleus, examining the processes of radioactive decay, fission, fusion and nuclear reactions, the particles and radiation they produce, and the technologies they make possible.

Nuclear power, medical imaging, radiation therapy and nuclear security all rest on this understanding.

At the University of Liverpool you will study core physics including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and mathematical methods, building the rigorous foundations that advanced physics requires. The nuclear science specialism takes you into the physics of the nucleus and nuclear reactions, radiation detection and measurement, nuclear astrophysics, and the science and engineering of nuclear power generation. Liverpool has strong research activity in nuclear physics and particle physics, providing a stimulating research context for undergraduate study.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different physics department and to experience different approaches to nuclear science internationally.

Physics graduates are among the most versatile in the jobs market. The analytical and quantitative skills developed by a physics degree are valued across engineering, finance, computing, defence, the energy sector and many other fields. The nuclear science specialism opens specific pathways in nuclear power, nuclear medicine, radiation protection, defence and security, and academic nuclear research.
