About this course

Physics and mathematics are perhaps the most naturally aligned academic disciplines: mathematics provides the language in which the laws of physics are written, and physics supplies some of the deepest motivations for mathematical development. Studying them together gives you a richer understanding of both than either alone would provide, and equips you with a level of analytical and quantitative fluency that is genuinely distinctive in any professional context.

At Keele this three-year full-time programme is accredited and explores the deep connection between the two disciplines. You will study core physics, covering mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and modern physics, alongside the mathematical structures that underpin them, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and numerical methods. The programme develops not only your command of physical concepts and mathematical technique but also the programming and computational skills that are increasingly central to both research and professional practice.

Critical thinking and problem-solving are woven throughout: you will regularly encounter problems that require you to identify the right approach as well as execute it. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to develop your understanding in international and professional contexts during your studies.

Graduates of physics with mathematics programmes are among the most versatile in the STEM world. Careers in finance, data science, software engineering, actuarial work, and research and development draw heavily on this combination, as do roles in the aerospace, defence, energy, and technology sectors. The analytical, modelling, and computational skills you develop are valued by employers who need people capable of tackling complex quantitative problems.
