About this course

Physics with geophysics brings together two disciplines that share a common foundation in the mathematical description of the physical world, yet direct that foundation towards very different objects of study. Core physics gives you the tools to understand matter, energy, waves, quantum behaviour, and the forces that govern the universe. Geophysics then applies those tools to the Earth itself, using seismic waves, gravity measurements, electromagnetic methods, and computational modelling to reveal what lies beneath the surface, from the crust we live on to the planet's molten inner core.

This three-year full-time programme at the University of Liverpool is designed to put you at the forefront of modern physics while teaching you how we use physical principles to image the Earth's static and dynamic subsurface. You will study the mechanics and thermodynamics that underpin planetary structure, the wave physics that allows seismologists to map fault zones and geological boundaries, and the techniques used to understand how the Earth changes over time. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution overseas and to experience how geophysical research and education are conducted in a different scientific culture, broadening your international perspective and professional networks.
