About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, concerned with the principles that govern matter, energy, space and time at every scale from the subatomic to the cosmological. It underpins all of the other sciences and much of modern technology, and a physics degree develops a particularly powerful combination of quantitative reasoning, mathematical fluency and analytical problem-solving that is valued across a remarkably wide range of careers.

At Newcastle University, the four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which builds the mathematical and scientific foundations you need before progressing onto the full degree. You will study classical mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, relativity and statistical physics, developing a comprehensive understanding of the discipline. The programme also develops practical skills in data science and Python programming, reflecting the growing importance of computational methods in physics and in the broader science and technology sector.
