About this course

From the nuclear reactions that power the sun to the vast filaments of dark matter threading through the cosmos, astrophysics confronts some of the most profound questions science can ask. Physics with Astrophysics combines rigorous training in the fundamentals of physics with a sustained engagement with the science of the universe at the largest scales, exploring how galaxies form, how stars live and die, and what the evidence tells us about the origins and fate of everything we can observe.

At York you will study the core pillars of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and the mathematical methods that unite them, before turning your attention to the great challenges of cosmology and observational astronomy. Topics linked to active research at the university give your studies a direct connection to work being done at the frontier of the discipline. Over three years of full-time study you will develop strong analytical and computational skills, learning to handle data, build physical models, and evaluate evidence critically.

The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to spend a period in professional placement alongside your academic studies, and there is also the option of a year abroad, broadening your perspective and international experience.
