About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, seeking to understand the laws that govern matter, energy, space and time from the subatomic to the cosmological scale. Astrophysics extends those principles to the study of stars, galaxies, black holes, dark matter and the large-scale structure of the universe, asking how the cosmos formed and how it works at the largest scales we can observe. Studying physics with an astrophysics specialism gives you a rigorous grounding in the core discipline alongside a focus on some of the most compelling questions in contemporary science.

At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you an unusually rich combination of international and professional experience alongside your academic studies. You will develop a thorough understanding of classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics and statistical physics, as well as the mathematical tools that all of these demand.
