About this course

Physics with astrophysics is a degree for people who want to understand the universe at the most fundamental level. Physics develops the theoretical frameworks and experimental methods to describe how matter and energy behave, from the smallest subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of space-time. Astrophysics extends those frameworks to the cosmos itself, examining how stars are born and die, how galaxies form and evolve, how black holes behave and what the origin and ultimate fate of the universe might be.

Together they constitute one of the most intellectually demanding and rewarding courses of study available.

At the University of Manchester, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route for students who need to strengthen their mathematical and scientific preparation before tackling degree-level physics. The University of Manchester has a proud history in both physics and radio astronomy, and the degree benefits from that tradition.
