About this course

Physics with astronomy is a degree that places you at the frontier of our understanding of the universe, combining rigorous training in the fundamental principles of physics with a deep engagement with the science of stars, galaxies, black holes, exoplanets and the large-scale structure of the cosmos. Astronomy asks some of the most profound questions human beings can pose about their place in the universe, and answering them requires the full mathematical and experimental toolkit of modern physics.

At the University of Southampton this four-year MPhys programme covers all aspects of astronomy over its full duration, taught by academics who are directly involved in world-leading research. You will study advanced physics, including quantum mechanics, relativity, electromagnetism and statistical mechanics, alongside the specific astrophysical and cosmological content that astronomy requires. The degree includes research-level project work in the later years, giving you experience of working as a scientist rather than simply as a student, and preparing you for the postgraduate research that many graduates pursue.

The programme runs full time.

The master's-level qualification positions graduates strongly for PhD research in physics, astrophysics and cosmology, whether at Southampton or elsewhere, and the skills developed, including data analysis, mathematical modelling, programming and the ability to tackle open-ended problems, transfer exceptionally well into a wide range of professional contexts. Finance, data science, technology, engineering, science communication and government research are among the many career destinations for physics graduates. Teaching is also a valued pathway, and the depth of scientific training the MPhys provides is strong preparation for postgraduate teacher training in physics, a subject in high demand in schools.
