About this course

Physics is the fundamental science, concerned with understanding the basic constituents of matter and energy and the laws that govern their interactions, from the smallest subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the cosmos. It develops a way of thinking that is rigorous, quantitative, and committed to testing ideas against evidence, and the tools of physical reasoning are applicable to an extraordinarily wide range of problems both inside and outside the conventional boundaries of the discipline. A physics degree builds the mathematical and conceptual foundation on which much of modern science and engineering is built.

At York, this four-year degree includes a foundation year for students who have the potential for success in physics but who have not yet studied the necessary qualifications or who have not met the typical entry requirements. The foundation year provides the mathematical and scientific grounding needed to progress confidently into the main degree programme, making physics accessible to a wider range of talented students. You will then study the full physics curriculum, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, and modern physics topics in condensed matter, astrophysics, or particle physics, depending on your interests and the programme's options.

Throughout the degree you will develop problem-solving skills and mathematical fluency that are among the most transferable of any discipline.

Physics graduates have consistently excellent employment prospects across a wide range of sectors. Research and development in technology, defence, energy, and the medical sector draws on physics graduates with strong quantitative skills. Finance and data science value the same skills in a commercial context.

Many physics graduates also pursue postgraduate study, either moving into research through a master's or doctoral programme, or extending their training into engineering, computing, or another applied field. The foundation year route ensures that the degree is open to students from a wider range of backgrounds, widening access to one of the most rewarding and intellectually demanding of all undergraduate programmes.
