About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, investigating the basic laws that govern matter, energy, space and time, from the quantum behaviour of subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the cosmos. It is a discipline that demands both mathematical rigour and physical intuition, training you to model complex phenomena quantitatively and to test those models against observation. At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year full-time degree includes a sandwich year, year abroad and work placement, providing a practically and internationally enriched education in a subject that develops some of the most transferable quantitative and analytical skills available at degree level.

You will study classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, special relativity and the experimental methods of physical measurement, developing the mathematical fluency and problem-solving approach that physics demands. As the programme progresses, you will explore specialist areas and engage with research-level questions that extend beyond the standard curriculum. The placement year gives you professional experience in a scientific, technical or industrial context, and the year abroad extends your educational experience into an international setting.
