About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, asking the deepest questions about the nature of matter, energy, space, and time. From the quantum behaviour of particles to the large-scale structure of the universe, physics seeks to discover the principles that govern all physical phenomena and to express them in the precise language of mathematics. It is a discipline that demands a particular kind of mind, one that is comfortable with abstraction and quantitative reasoning, willing to question assumptions, and capable of working through complex problems with careful rigour.

At the University of Southampton this three-year full-time programme takes you through the core theoretical and experimental dimensions of physics. You will explore classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and the theory of relativity alongside specialist topics as you progress through the degree. You will study how these theories help us understand the physical world at scales ranging from subatomic particles to cosmological structures.

Throughout the programme you will develop advanced mathematical and computational skills that are valued across a wide range of professional and research contexts, and you will gain experience of experimental physics and data analysis that develops your practical scientific capabilities.

Physics graduates are among the most broadly employable of all science graduates. Many enter research, either in academic physics or in industrial research and development across sectors including aerospace, defence, energy, and technology. Finance and actuarial science are major employers of physicists, valued for their quantitative reasoning.

Data science, computing, engineering, scientific computing, and the civil service are other common paths. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study, either in physics itself or in related disciplines such as engineering, meteorology, or scientific computing.
