About this course

Physics is the foundational natural science, concerned with understanding the laws that govern matter, energy, space, and time at every scale from the subatomic to the cosmological. The discipline encompasses classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and the physics of condensed matter, and its theoretical and experimental methods underpin a wide range of technologies and neighbouring sciences. Studying physics at degree level means developing both mathematical rigour and physical intuition, and learning to move fluently between abstract theory and experimental evidence.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution overseas and to encounter physics within a different academic and cultural context. The description of physics at Glasgow reflects the discipline as Glasgow practises it: as both experimental and theoretical study of matter and energy and their interactions, ranging from the domain of elementary particles through nuclear and atomic physics to the physics of solids, and ultimately to the origins of the universe itself.
