About this course

Physics is the science that seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the universe, from the behaviour of subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of space and time. It encompasses quantum theory, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, relativity and cosmology, and it lies at the heart of most modern technology, including lasers, semiconductors, medical imaging, renewable energy and telecommunications. Studying physics develops an exceptionally powerful set of analytical and mathematical tools, as well as a habit of thinking that seeks to reduce complex phenomena to their underlying principles.

At Queen's University Belfast this four-year MSci is an undergraduate Masters degree aimed at students who wish to pursue physics to the limits of current knowledge. The integrated Masters structure means that by the end of the four years you will have reached a depth of understanding and a level of research competence normally associated with a first year of postgraduate study. You will work through the core areas of the discipline, including quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, particle physics and condensed matter, before moving into more advanced and specialised territory in your final years.

The degree is designed for students with the potential to become research scientists and to contribute to the next generation of discoveries.

Physics graduates are among the most versatile in the sciences. Many go on to careers in research, either in academia or in national laboratories, research institutes and technology companies. Others find roles in engineering, finance, data science, software development, telecommunications, defence and energy.

The analytical, mathematical and problem-solving skills that physics develops are valued across a remarkably broad range of professional contexts. The MSci route also provides excellent preparation for postgraduate research in physics, astrophysics, materials science, engineering or related scientific disciplines.
