Here's the honest picture on this course - what you'd study, whether you'd likely get in, what it pays, and where it leads. Everything's real data.
About this course

Physics is humanity's most fundamental attempt to understand the universe: its laws, its structure, and the forces that govern everything from the subatomic to the cosmological. It is a discipline built on mathematical rigour, careful experiment, and the willingness to revise even the most established ideas when evidence demands it. The knowledge physics has generated underpins virtually all modern technology, from semiconductors and lasers to medical imaging and satellite navigation, and the ways of thinking it develops are among the most transferable of any degree.

At the University of Sheffield, this three-year full-time BSc in Physics is an accredited programme that equips you with the fundamental knowledge and skills every physicist needs. You will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and statistical physics, progressing to more advanced topics in condensed matter, particle physics, and astrophysics as the course develops. Practical laboratory work is central to the degree, developing your ability to design experiments, collect and analyse data, and draw defensible conclusions from evidence.

A sandwich placement year and year abroad are both available, giving you the option to spend time in a professional research or industrial environment and to gain international experience, while the work placement component adds structured industry exposure.

The problem-solving skills, mathematical fluency, and quantitative reasoning that a physics degree develops are sought after across a wide range of sectors. Many physics graduates pursue careers in research and development in technology, engineering, computing, and the physical sciences. Others move into finance, particularly quantitative roles in investment banking and risk analysis, where the modelling skills transfer directly.

Defence, telecommunications, energy, and healthcare are also major employers of physics graduates. Postgraduate study is common, either in physics itself or in related fields such as engineering, computing, or mathematics.

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship one…

Exceeded expectations
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transpo…
