About this course

Physics is the fundamental science, concerned with understanding the nature of matter, energy, space, and time at every scale from the subatomic to the cosmological. It has given us quantum mechanics, general relativity, the standard model of particle physics, the Big Bang theory, and the mathematical structures that underpin much of modern science and technology. Studying physics to degree level develops an exceptionally rigorous analytical mind, trained to move from observation to mathematical model to testable prediction with discipline and precision.

At the University of Liverpool you will study this three-year full-time degree, which includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a different university and to experience physics education and research in another national context. Liverpool has a distinguished history in particle physics, as well as strong research across condensed matter, astrophysics, and medical physics, and the programme gives you access to an intellectually rich environment shaped by active research. Across the programme you will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, special relativity, optics, nuclear and particle physics, and the mathematical methods that physics requires.

Laboratory work develops your practical and experimental skills, and the year abroad typically involves studying advanced topics or participating in research at the host institution. The typical entry tariff is 136 points.
