About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the sciences, examining the laws that govern matter, energy, space and time at every scale from subatomic particles to the structure of the universe as a whole. It is the discipline from which most of the transformative technologies of the last two centuries have emerged, from the transistor and the laser to nuclear power and medical imaging. Physicists develop ways of thinking that are precise, mathematical and deeply creative, building models of the world that can be tested against experiment and used to make predictions of extraordinary accuracy.

At the University of Leeds this three-year, full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in classical and modern physics, covering mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity and atomic, nuclear and particle physics alongside the mathematical methods the subject demands. As the degree progresses you will encounter more specialised areas and engage with the research frontier in ways that reflect Leeds's strong scientific culture.
