About this course

Physical geography is the branch of geography concerned with the natural processes that shape the Earth's surface, climate, and living environment. It is a genuinely broad discipline, spanning geomorphology, hydrology, climatology, biogeography, soil science, and oceanography, and it requires both scientific rigour and the ability to think across systems and scales. Physical geographers study how rivers erode and deposit sediment, how glaciers advance and retreat, how coastal landforms evolve, how climate drives vegetation patterns, and how human activity is altering these processes.

As environmental change accelerates, the skills physical geography develops have become increasingly valuable to policymakers, planners, and environmental managers.

At Aberystwyth University you will study in one of the most established geography departments in the UK, situated in a location that offers direct access to some of Britain's most varied and geographically instructive landscapes. The three-year programme develops your understanding of the key processes shaping natural environments alongside the practical and technical skills that fieldwork and quantitative analysis demand. You will engage with remote sensing and GIS technologies, data analysis, and scientific writing, building a professional skill set as well as deep disciplinary knowledge.

The setting gives you genuine opportunities for field study in coastal, upland, and fluvial environments that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere.

Physical geography graduates work in environmental consultancy, the water industry, local and national government, conservation organisations, weather and climate services, mapping and surveying, and development agencies. Roles in environmental management, flood risk assessment, sustainability, and geographic information systems are in consistent demand. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in physical geography, environmental science, climate science, or GIS, either to enter academic research or to develop specialist professional expertise.
