About this course

Physical education with outdoor education is a degree that pushes the boundaries of traditional PE study by combining the pedagogy, sport science, and curriculum knowledge of physical education with a focused engagement with outdoor activities and adventure learning. Physical education is about more than organised sport: it develops children's physical literacy, confidence, resilience, and wellbeing, and educators who can teach across indoor and outdoor environments are able to offer young people a particularly rich and varied physical education experience.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time programme combines traditional physical education study with a focus on outdoor activities such as climbing, kayaking, mountain walking, and expedition leadership alongside the core foundations of PE teaching, sport science, and curriculum design. You will develop your knowledge of physical development, motor learning, and health and wellbeing alongside outdoor education theory, environmental education, and the practical skills needed to teach and lead learning in outdoor contexts. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you international experience of different physical and outdoor education cultures.

Entry typically requires around 88 UCAS tariff points.

Graduates go on to careers as PE teachers in secondary schools with additional teaching qualification, outdoor education instructors, youth work and community development practitioners, adventure sports coaches, and health and wellbeing educators. The combination of physical education training with outdoor education skills is distinctive and valued by a range of employers in education, youth work, and the outdoor recreation sector.

Highly recommend
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student ci…

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you sh…
