Photography is far more than a technical skill: it is a way of seeing, a medium for bearing witness, a form of artistic expression, and an instrument of documentary and commercial communication. Studying it at degree level means developing the visual intelligence and conceptual rigour to make intentional, considered images, alongside the technical command of equipment, light, and post-production to realise your creative intentions fully. A photography degree also situates your work within the broader history of the medium and the contemporary landscape of image culture.

At the University of Portsmouth, this three-year full-time BA includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you structured professional and international experience alongside your studio-based studies. You will explore the full range of photographic practice, from documentary and portraiture through commercial and editorial photography to fine art and conceptual image-making, developing your own distinctive approach and building a strong portfolio. The programme prepares you for the creative and cultural industries in their current, rapidly changing form, attending to how photographers work, exhibit, and sustain their practice in a digital world.

The year abroad gives you the experience of working in a different visual culture and perhaps a different photographic market, and the placement year puts your skills to work in a real professional context, building the contacts and commercial awareness that are essential in a freelance-dominated industry.

Graduates move into careers as photographers across commercial, editorial, documentary, and fine art contexts, as well as into related roles in photo editing, art direction, picture research, social media and visual content management, and gallery and museum work. Some establish independent practices while others work within agencies, brands, or media organisations. The analytical and visual skills developed on the programme are also valued in advertising, design, and the broader creative economy.

Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in photography, arts practice, or visual culture.
