Philosophy

Philosophy is the discipline concerned with the most fundamental questions we can ask: what exists, what we can know, how we ought to live, what makes reasoning valid, and what language and consciousness actually are. It approaches these questions with rigorous argument, careful analysis, and a willingness to question assumptions that other disciplines take for granted. Far from being merely abstract, philosophical thinking underpins every field of inquiry, and the capacity to evaluate arguments, identify hidden assumptions, and think clearly about complex problems is one of the most transferable skills a graduate can possess.

At the University of Reading, this three-year, full-time degree develops exactly those capacities. You will gain understanding of the central problems, concepts, texts, and figures in the philosophical tradition, working across areas such as ethics, political philosophy, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and logic. The programme encourages you to engage critically with your own thinking as well as with the arguments of others, developing the intellectual flexibility that philosophical training at its best produces.

A sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement are all available, giving you the opportunity to apply your analytical skills in professional environments and to study in a different academic culture. Philosophy graduates are found across an exceptionally wide range of careers. The analytical rigour and clear writing that the discipline demands are valued in law, where many philosophy graduates go on to conversion qualifications before qualifying as solicitors or barristers.
