Philosophy

Philosophy is the disciplined examination of the most fundamental questions available to human inquiry: what is real, what can we know, what should we do, how should we live together, and what makes reasoning valid? The University of Liverpool's three-year full-time Philosophy programme provides a thorough introduction to the discipline, engaging with both historical and contemporary philosophy across the main areas of the field. You will study metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, logic, and philosophy of mind, reading canonical texts from Plato, Descartes, Hume, and Kant alongside contemporary analytic philosophers. You will learn to write philosophical essays that construct and defend arguments step by step, to identify and challenge assumptions, and to engage with ideas that are genuinely difficult with intellectual seriousness and precision.

Liverpool's department has particular research strengths that inform its teaching, and the programme offers the opportunity to develop expertise in areas of particular interest as you progress.
