Philosophy
Philosophy is the oldest academic discipline and one of the most enduringly relevant. It asks the fundamental questions: what exists, what can we know, how should we act, what makes reasoning valid, and what is the relationship between mind and world? Rather than treating these as abstract puzzles remote from everyday life, philosophy develops the tools to examine them rigorously, and in doing so trains a kind of thinking that proves exceptionally versatile.
Engaging with philosophy means learning to construct and evaluate arguments, to identify hidden assumptions, to distinguish strong evidence from weak, and to reason clearly about complex and contested questions.
At Hull, this three-year programme invites you to debate both perennial philosophical questions and the pressing issues of the present, including the ethics and implications of artificial intelligence, questions of gender and identity, and the philosophical dimensions of environmental crisis. You will study logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and the history of philosophy, developing a comprehensive grounding in the discipline while also engaging with contemporary debates that connect philosophical analysis to real-world concerns. The emphasis on doing philosophy, rather than merely learning about it, means that seminars and discussions are central to the experience, and you will graduate not just with a body of knowledge but with a genuinely sharpened capacity for critical thought.
Philosophy graduates are sought after across a wide range of sectors precisely because of the thinking skills the degree develops.
