Philosophy, Politics and Economics with Placement Experience

Philosophy, politics, and economics is one of the most intellectually demanding and professionally influential undergraduate degrees available. Each discipline brings a distinct set of tools: philosophy develops rigorous argument and the capacity to interrogate assumptions and clarify concepts; politics provides the frameworks for understanding how power is organised, contested, and exercised in states and internationally; and economics offers the analytical apparatus for understanding how resources are allocated, how incentives operate, and how markets and institutions shape collective outcomes. Studied together, they produce graduates who can think clearly, argue carefully, and engage with complex problems from multiple angles.

At the University of Reading, this four-year full-time programme includes placement experience, giving you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in a professional setting. You will encounter the practical dimensions of policy, business, or public affairs alongside your academic studies, building the contextual understanding and professional skills that employers value. You will explore political theory and institutions, the history and philosophy of ideas, microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, and the conceptual foundations of all three disciplines, developing an unusually broad and integrated intellectual training.

PPE graduates are found at the highest levels of government, business, finance, law, journalism, the civil service, international organisations, consultancy, and academic life. The degree is particularly valued in roles that require the ability to synthesise complex information, construct and communicate arguments, and engage with questions that span economic, political, and ethical dimensions. Postgraduate study in economics, political science, philosophy, law, or public policy is a common progression, as are direct entry routes into professional and graduate training programmes across many sectors.
