Philosophy, Politics and Economics, widely known as PPE, is one of the most intellectually demanding and broadly regarded undergraduate degrees available. It brings together three disciplines that, while distinct, share a fundamental concern with how human societies are organised and how decisions about resources, power, and values are made. Philosophy provides the tools for rigorous argument and ethical reasoning.

Politics examines institutions, governance, and the exercise of power. Economics analyses how markets, incentives, and resource allocation shape material life. Together, the three disciplines produce graduates equipped to think carefully about almost any significant question in public life.

At Swansea University, this three-year, full-time degree explores the intersecting questions that arise when you study all three together. You will examine how societies function and how political and economic decisions are made, alongside more abstract questions about the nature of justice, knowledge, and moral obligation. In economics you will study both micro and macroeconomic theory, learning how markets work and how policy can shape economic outcomes.

In politics you will engage with comparative government, democratic theory, and contemporary political issues. In philosophy you will develop skills in logical argument, ethical analysis, and the history of ideas. The combination sharpens your ability to evaluate complex situations from multiple angles simultaneously.

PPE graduates are found in an exceptionally wide range of careers. Government, the civil service, parliament, journalism, law, finance, consultancy, international organisations, and the charitable sector all draw heavily on PPE graduates, valuing their analytical breadth and their ability to engage with complex policy problems. The degree is particularly strong preparation for roles that require clear thinking about competing values and practical trade-offs.

Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, economics, law, public policy, or related disciplines.
