Philosophy, Ethics and Religion with Year Abroad

Philosophy, ethics, and religion is a combination that explores some of the deepest and most enduring questions human beings have faced. Philosophy asks about the nature of reality, knowledge, reasoning, and value, using careful argument to test ideas that might otherwise be assumed without question. Ethics considers how we ought to live, what we owe each other, and how we should approach difficult moral decisions at both the personal and the political level.

At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to engage with philosophical and religious traditions in a different academic and cultural context. You will explore questions about knowledge, reality, how we should live, whether religious beliefs can be justified, and how philosophy can be applied to real-world problems such as global poverty and justice. The programme is designed to cultivate intellectual rigour, openness to alternative perspectives, and the ability to engage seriously with positions you may not initially share.

You will develop strong skills in argument analysis, essay writing, close reading of philosophical and religious texts, and the construction of carefully reasoned positions.
