Philosophy and Theology

Philosophy and theology are disciplines that have been in conversation for centuries, each asking fundamental questions about the nature of reality, knowledge, morality, and the human condition. Philosophy approaches these questions through argument, reason, and the critical analysis of concepts and claims. Theology brings its own rigorous scholarly methods to the study of religious traditions, texts, doctrines, and the experience of the sacred.

Together they provide one of the most intellectually demanding and personally enriching areas of study available at university level.

Studied part-time at the University of the Highlands and Islands, this programme offers the flexibility to pursue serious intellectual work alongside other commitments, developing the skills of careful reading, clear argument, and precise expression that both disciplines require. You will engage with major figures in the history of western and world philosophy, with the texts and traditions of the great religious traditions, and with contemporary debates in ethics, philosophy of religion, metaphysics, and theology. The Highlands and Islands context, with its strong traditions of Gaelic Christianity and its history of religious and philosophical reflection, gives the programme a distinctive regional character alongside its broader scholarly scope.

Philosophy and theology graduates go on to careers in education, ministry and pastoral work, counselling, journalism, publishing, law, the civil service, ethics consultancy, and a wide range of roles where the ability to reason carefully and communicate clearly is valued. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, theology, religious studies, ethics, or law, and the analytical rigour that both disciplines develop is excellent preparation for research at any level.
