Philosophy and Theology

Philosophy and theology are disciplines that have been in dialogue for millennia, each shaping the other in ways that continue to matter for how we think about fundamental questions. Philosophy asks about the nature of reality, knowledge, morality, rationality and what makes a life well-lived. Theology examines religious faith, sacred texts, doctrinal traditions and the relationship between religion and other dimensions of human experience.

Together they ask some of the most profound and difficult questions human beings have ever posed: about God, about meaning, about how we should live, about death and transcendence, and about the foundations of ethics and community.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year programme engages you with both traditions in a part of Scotland that has its own distinctive religious and philosophical history, including the influence of the Reformation, the survival of Gaelic religious culture and the complex relationships between faith and Highland community life. The part-time options make the programme accessible to those who cannot study full time, and the combination of disciplines attracts students with a wide range of backgrounds and motivations.

You will study the history of philosophy, ethics, logic, epistemology and metaphysics alongside Christian theology in its historical and contemporary forms, biblical studies, the philosophy of religion and the relationship between faith and reason. Both disciplines develop careful reading, rigorous argument and the capacity to engage honestly with positions that challenge your own assumptions.

Graduates go on to careers in ministry and religious life, education, chaplaincy, the civil service, journalism, ethical consultancy, healthcare ethics, social care, the cultural sector and community organisations. Many continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, theology, ethics or related disciplines, including doctoral research. The intellectual training both disciplines provide is valued across many professional fields where ethical reasoning, communication and critical thinking are required.
