About this course

Philosophy and theology are two of the oldest and most searching disciplines in Western intellectual life, and they have been in profound conversation for over two thousand years. Philosophy asks foundational questions about knowledge, reality, ethics, and the nature of the mind through rigorous argument and conceptual analysis. Theology examines the nature of religious belief, the claims of sacred texts and traditions, and the intellectual and spiritual heritage of the world's religions, asking how human beings have sought to understand their place in the universe and their relationship to what they regard as ultimate.

Together, they develop your capacity for careful reasoning alongside a deep engagement with the questions that have mattered most to human beings across history.

At the University of Nottingham, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year and work placements, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience in contexts where philosophical and theological understanding are relevant, including education, the voluntary sector, faith communities, ethics consultancy, and public life. You will engage with major philosophical traditions and arguments, from the pre-Socratics through Descartes, Kant, and Wittgenstein to contemporary debates, alongside a rich theological curriculum covering biblical studies, the history of Christianity and other world religions, systematic theology, and ethics. The combination develops your analytical rigour, your understanding of different belief systems, and your capacity to engage thoughtfully with some of the deepest human questions.

Graduates from philosophy and theology programmes go on to careers in education, the ministry, the civil service, journalism, social work, counselling, the charity sector, and research. The combination of analytical and ethical reasoning develops skills that are valued in almost every field that requires careful thinking about complex human situations. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, theology, religious studies, or law, and some pursue academic or research careers in these disciplines.
