Philosophy and Theology & Religion

Philosophy and theology and religious studies is a combination that brings two of the oldest academic disciplines into sustained dialogue. Philosophy provides the tools of logical analysis, critical reasoning, and conceptual clarification that are needed to engage rigorously with any subject, while theology and religious studies brings an equally deep tradition of inquiry into the nature of the divine, the meaning of religious experience, and the role of religion in human life and society. Together, they allow you to engage with the biggest questions that human beings have posed, about meaning, morality, existence, and transcendence, with both intellectual precision and genuine depth.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme combines philosophical inquiry with a deep examination of religion. You will study the major religions of the world, comparing their traditions, texts, and practices, with a particular focus on Christian faith in both its historical and contemporary expressions. Alongside this, you will develop the philosophical skills, including logic, argumentation, and ethical reasoning, that allow you to engage critically with religious claims and the broader questions that religion raises.

In your third year you will spend a year abroad, deepening your intellectual and personal horizons. With a typical entry tariff of 184 UCAS points, this is a demanding programme at a research-active university.
