Philosophy and Sustainable Development

Philosophy and sustainable development is a combination with particular relevance to the most urgent questions facing humanity today. Philosophy develops the capacity for rational, independent argument and critical analysis, asking fundamental questions about how we can know things, how we ought to live, and what we owe each other. Sustainable development applies analytical and practical thinking to the challenge of meeting human needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

It engages with environmental science, economics, politics, and ethics, asking what development means, who it benefits, and how the human relationship with the natural world can be organised on a more equitable and sustainable basis.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) programme includes a year abroad, giving you international academic experience and the opportunity to engage with sustainable development challenges in a different country and context. The philosophy component familiarises you with the major arguments and traditions in the philosophical canon, both historical and contemporary, and develops the skills of rational assessment, clear thinking, and principled debate that are central to the discipline. The sustainable development component brings these analytical capacities to bear on the real and complex problems of environmental governance, climate justice, poverty, and intergenerational equity.

You will develop exceptional analytical rigour, the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments, and the ethical and political understanding needed to engage seriously with sustainability challenges at the global level.

Graduates from philosophy and sustainable development programmes pursue careers in international organisations, NGOs, environmental policy, sustainability consultancy, government, research, journalism, and a range of other fields where both analytical depth and engagement with real-world sustainability challenges are valued. Postgraduate study in philosophy, sustainability, environmental policy, or ethics is a natural continuation.
